Filipinos in Berlin support needy Parish
by: Fr. Adonis Narcelles SVD
Berlin. With series of fund-raising events, the Philippine Community in Berlin showed their solidarity with their needy “kababayans” by supporting a Parish Community in the Philippines. In connection with the Mission Month of October, the Parish Pastoral Council spearheaded a “Bing-for-a-Cause” on October 30 to raise funds to support the Parish. Food was also sold on that day. Old books were sold for this noble purpose. The round 400 Euros gathered shows the generosity of the Filipinos and their solidarity with their less-fortunate countrymen and women.

The St. Arnold Janssen Parish in Cebu is the Archdiosan Shrine of the German-founder of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Arnold Janssen who was canonized two years ago in Rome together with St. Joseph Freinademetz, a missionary in China.
The Parish Priest Fr. Cornelio Alpuerto SVD wrote: “We are an eight-year-old parish located in a depressed area in the southern outskirts of Cebu City. Most of our parishioners are deprived and marginalized.”

This Parish has also a symbolic value to the Philippine Community in Berlin. It is not only a sign of solidarity but also of gratitude to the Society of the Divine Word who has founded and supported the Filipino Community for almost 20 years. Together with the Parish Pastoral Council, a Mission Commission was also organized to monitor this “mission project” and other initiatives of the community. The “KUBO” of the community hopes to provide the regular support for these noble projects. More than financial help, the community endeavors to foster closer contact and dialogue of faith with fellow Christians in the home country.
