Berlin. Cardinal George Sterzinsky of the Archdiocese of Berlin encouraged the members of the Legion of Mary to be a witness of their faith and to continue their apostolic services in Berlin where Catholics are only a minority. In a meeting and dialogue with the different Presidia of the Legionaries in Berlin on October 29, the Cardinal listened to the reports and concerns of the different groups in Berlin which include many foreign groups from Korea, Croatia, Spain, Poland, Vietnam and the Philippines.
The Meeting was also a celebration elevating the status of the Legion of Mary in Berlin to a ”Comitium”. The gathering started with a Rosary and ended with a Holy Mass with the Cardinal as Main Celebrant together with six other priests in the Archdiocese.
The Mass was held in the Church of St. Boniface. The meaningful sharing of experiences ended with an international buffet with specialties from various countries represented in the meeting.
The gathering was particularly meaningful for the Filipinos. In addition to the existing Presidium of Immacualte Conception, another Presidium was formally recognized with Sis. Linda Glawe as the designated leader. Presidium “Mother of Divine Grace” is the name chosen by the group. The new group hopes to attract more followers to this “biggest world-wide Church organization” with members comprising about 20 Million Marian devotees. The Legion of Mary was founded in 1929 in Dublin by Frank Duff, who died 25 years ago.
Like in several encounters with Cardinal Sterzinsky, he again appreciated the cheerfulness of the Filipinos and asked: “Why are the Filipinos always happy?” The Filipinos present just smiled. Perhaps he could find the answer when he visits the Filipino community next year on the 20th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Community Center in Berlin. Wait and see.
